Experimenting with minimalism, chibi, typography, and a modern outfit for Vahaadi.
Some details on Vahaadi's design.
Working on more expressive posing...
More expressive posing, cont. I'm working my way through ReincarnatedPorano's Body Language Meme; I would have never thought of drawing Vahaadi drunk otherwise. XD He is physically incapable of becoming drunk due to the way his stomach processes food (it's a Ia'lerian Djinni thing.) And really, that's for the better; Vahaadi can't make good decisions when he's sober, so I can just imagine what he's like when he's smashed.
I'm excited to continue working my way through the meme. It's great practice and it's been really fun to get more in touch with the way Vahaadi acts. I need to work on ensuring his outfit is consistent from drawing to drawing (I keep shuffling up his jewelry in particular, or leaving out the coins on his right sash) or else come up with new outfits that are obviously distinct. Which brings me to another major design challenge...
Colors @_@ I'm so bad at picking colors it's not even funny. This is what I've got for his "usual" outfit so far, but I'm still not sold on it. My concern in choosing these colors was avoiding black and red so that he won't look color-coordinated to Spark, but as you can see I couldn't resist the red. I've also been told the white is off-putting. Hmmmm...Another concern is preventing him from looking too much like Aladdin, the Prince of Persia, Sinbad or Flynn Rider.
Anyway, I'm satisfied with how his design and my art are coming along, but there's still work to be done. Colors, consistency, and alternative outfits are all on the agenda.
But in the meantime, have a My Little Pony Vahaadi. XD
I'm actually really burned out on MLP in general, but I drew this awhile ago and promised I'd share it. His pony name is Luster because his super special talent is wearing way too much shiny stuff and tricking other ponies into wanting what they shouldn't have. Ho ho ho, double meaning! He should probably be a unicorn, but I didn't think of it at the time.

Lol, double entendre pony. xD
Ooooo, colors! 8D
Instead of white, what about cream? I dunno, I think sandy colors when I think Arab-y for him, but I'm an Earth-tone person and am probably just biased. White is hardly uncommon, for hot-region fashion. It does look pretty weird mixed with the red and purple, though. I'm thinking there's just too much contrast.
What about coming up with a color spectrum first, then applying which color goes where? It's a different way of working it out, been at it myself and the results are interesting (it doesn't always work, but it can reeeally point out the problems). Right now you've got:
*cool color saturated tones for the collar and sword
*cool color dull tones for the rug, whip, ragged armwrap, vest trim, and leather straps;
*warm color saturated tones for the cowl, sashes, and hair:
*warm color dull tone for the shoes, eyes, skin, and gold.
I've also been working on the idea of having one color spectrum per world/universe, so that people /look/ like they belong together and there's a certain emotive feel to the stories visually. This can also make individuals really pop and stand out in a world, because they just /don't/ /fit/-- particularly with clothing at first, if you see someone that screams YuGiOh coloring in a Winnie the Pooh world for example, but even after someone settles in, their clothing may change but /they/ won't, it's a [sometimes subconscious] clue to the viewer that here is a fish out of water. It also helps define the person's shopping struggles, as they have their own very clear ideas of what looks 'normal' that may not fit the local worldview... and clothes shopping, some things that one might automatically assume would look good might look /terrible/ with the person's actual skin color, leading to a lot of "I thought green would look great on you... but something isn't right! That looks HORRIBLE!" moments in which people know something's off but can't figure out quite what or how to fit it-- and then you end up with outfit colors that look alright but are completely unexpected.
Ahh, worlds. 8D
Yay, sketches!! <3
Thanks for the coloring suggestion, that's a neat idea! I shall have to play with that. And yeah, I'll definitely try cream for his main outfit. It actually already IS cream, but because the background is brown, it looks white. I just need to go more yellowish.
Yay sketches indeed!
Okay okay okay, first let me so SORRY I am so overdue on commenting on this. Secondly, let me say that I got all excited just looking at these and I was grinning and bouncing on my seat and um yes. The effect of your art and all that.
I love ((You are going to read that a lot in this comment 'I love,' It's true, when it comes to your art, I just love.)) his stance in the first one, he looks so sleek. That modern outfit does give him that 'boy band' look Bree always used to say he has but I think all that means is that he's highly attractive in a young and hip kind of way.
Chibi Vahaadi is ADORABLE; you so excel at that style. I fail, so I will not even try. The closest I could come was my "Dora the Explorer" versions of them.
Minimalist is so interesting! I would never have included their collars, but it fits!
The accessories/detail page is fun. I wonder if I should do one for Spark, just like the ornaments on her shoes and her mask shape and stuff... I love the pose of him showing his crest. To me that's a very "classic Vahaadi" thing to do/expression.
WOW on the frustration pose! WHOLE BODY feelings. @_@ He's so expressive. It's no wonder Spark is fascinated by him. Vahaadi just lets it all out, and it's powerful and sometimes overwhelming and for most people (especially Lanthriel) very uncomfortable, but Spark admires it completely. I think she thinks Vahaadi is the height of how everyone should behave. ((Obviously, it's a good thing she doesn't run the world and at the time of getting a djinni she didn't know him well enough to wish for that...))
That waiting face XD "Krissy's been watching that football game for hours. Must they keep stopping the clock? Urrrrgh."
ACTION POSES ARE MY LOVE OH MY GOSH. These are the best thing ever. AHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH looking at these makes me want a poster of Vahaadi. A high color glossy poster of him doing something epic and it would look like the cover of an animated movie or a comic book or something fantastic.
The bottom one makes me love him so much more. It's a very good thing he can't actually get drunk or it's possible Spark would want him to be drunk all the time: "It's like the amazingness of regular Vahaadi, plus all the funloving spirit of me!" eesh, it would really end up like that Kesha song "This place is gonna bloooww!"
GLORIOUS COLOR! :D This is the main model you're using for the contest, right? To quote Duck, "He's so haaaaaaaaaandsome." I love it! The background color is a great touch too. I will have to complete one for Spark so we can really see if their colors match up, but I think they'll complement each other well!
AND I DIDN'T EVEN COMMENT ON THE PONY HOW-- WHAT IS THIS, I DON'T EVEN...
He's adorable. Flat out adorable. I want an episode where Zecora introduces the ponies to her friend Wish Granter like stat. He would meet Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash and think "I have a friend that is the exact combination of both of you."
And then he would meet Rarity and think "Finally, the world is not such a bad place. Here is someone who makes sense."
And then he would meet Twilight Sparkle and she would remind him of Lanthriel and he would say "Tell me more about your books" just to hear her talk and he would get lost in thought thinking of Lanthriel and Twilight would never even notice and that would go on all day.
Then he would meet Spike and dislike him and think "Ugh, there's something about him that reminds me of Kala," but he would also feel sorry for him when he realizes that Twilight is not very nice to Spike and then he would try to help Spike because he knows what it's like to have to take orders all the time and be forced to clean. They would develop an adorable comradeship.
Then he would meet AppleJack and find her utterly confusing but pleasant and he would be charmed by her immediate sense of kinship and hugs and bold welcome. Though secretly he would harbor the same feelings as Rarity "Let's do something about that mane..."
And THEN he would meet Fluttershy and he would tell her that her mane is so beautiful and her face is so beautiful, why does she hide it, and she would flush and faint and everypony would laugh and it would be the cutest thing everrrrrrrrrrr.
AND THEN he would meet Princess Celestia and he would be overwhelmed that she is so beautiful and majestic and he would just gape at her and feel a little too common for her type and want to get away but she would nuzzle the top of his little pony head and say that she is so glad he came to visit and then he would feel better.
She would invite them all to Canterlot for a gala and he could meet Princess Luna and he would like her a lot, because she's so strange and pretty. Her manner of speaking would amuse him, but he'd enjoy that she's not as stuck up as Van.
And everything would be right in the land of Ponies yayyyyyyyyy
I want this in my life.
Well I'll have YOU know that I was so excited just looking at through your comments and I was grinning and bouncing on my seat and um yes. <3 SQUEEEEE!
Oh my gosh, the boy band look. I was just thinking about that term of Bree's the other day, and how any guy that looked remotely modern earned that designation from her. Vahaadi would probably like the boy band scene. He'd probably be like a stagehand that helps with costume changes and misc stuff, since he often did that with the troupe. If he's goaded he can also play a sitar and sing (kind of) but the music he knows is hardly Backstreet Boys material. XD
Chibis are not usually my thing, but they're a nice break from focusing on anatomy, haha!
I saw a picture of the avengers in the minimalist style and I thought it was so neat I had to try it. I may do it up in color because I like the idea so much. I thought the collars would help suggest their face shapes. :3
If you wanted to do a detail page, that would be great! These are all things I'd actually put on a much larger character sheet rather than having your own. Vahaadi's just got so many details. @_@ I still have to design the pattern on his rug and I need to draw his lamp, too. He would be an animator's worse nightmare for all of the detail.
I give total props to coelasquid (http://coelasquid.deviantart.com/art/Looks-like-it-hurts-79091368) On the frustration pose. I imagine this is what Vahaadi looks like when he badly needs to vent some rage and has no outlet. D: Yikes, heaven forbid everyone should act just like Vahaadi! The world would end posthaste. Humanity can't possibly function at that level of selfishness and emotional instability.
Ha! If I were to caption his waiting pose, he'd be saying "If I wasn't immortal I'd have died of boredom by now..." Oh my gosh, the concept of football would just kill him.
I WANT A POSTER TOO @_@ Someday I will have to make one. Once my skill level gets to that point, and I don't need references for EVERYTHING.
Spark is a terrible friend to want him drunk all the time! XD I admit, it's nice to see Vahaadi actually enjoying himself, but, ugh! I'm sure his IQ is also halved when he's inebriated and he'd be totally USELESS for anything. I'm sure all of his charm goes out the window too, leaving only raucous sleaze behind. Yuccckkkkk. He needs better ways to unwind, like playing sports or something.
Maybe, but I'm not sure I like what's going on with his sash colors yet. I still need to play with it.
Suddenly, MLP fanfic! XD You're so silly. I'm not sure we have the same ideas of "Wish Granter's" experience in Equestria, but your ideas make me smile. :D
