I was commissioned by AC to design each of the girls based on her suggestions. These girls went through NUMEROUS revisions as I struggled to strike the balance between individuality (hair styles, poses, accessories, expressions) and consistency (face shape, proportions, dimensions), on top of differences in interpretation with AC, and--of course--my learning curve. I also experimented with several different drawing styles and compositions before settling on what you see here.
Without further ado
Royal Princess Holly. Her color is red and her motif is holly berries and leaves, which I incorporated into her diadem. AC first described her as being the most 'normal' of the girls, which I interpreted as being the classic demeanor of a princess and (in my mind) likely the favorite for the throne. Because I wanted to focus on her demure, regal air, she often came across looking a lot older than her sisters in her multiple revisions, like she might have been their mother rather than one of the brood, especially since her diadem was originally a crown. Letting down her hair helped significantly.
Timid Princess Dawn. Her color is orange and her motif is a sun-in-glory, which I incorporated into her pendant. Dawn became cripplingly shy after an unfortunate experience with an impatient tutor. I had the opposite problem with Dawn as opposed to Holly--she ended up looking too young. Dawn went through the most revisions of all the girls, but they were worth it. This is my favorite piece of the set.
Feisty Princess Ivy. Her color is green and her motif is an ivy vine, which I incorporated into her tiara. In my interpretation, she's a bit of a thug, but she always means well. She's Dawn's self-appointed guard dog and can frequently be found in scuffles with their bully of a sister, Sky. I envision her to be the type to sneak out of the castle in disguise so that she can get some action in the kingdom's street fights (which are illegal, of course, but Ivy's not about to rat out her source of entertainment.) I had a lot of trouble getting Ivy's pose right. Still not sure if I nailed the anatomy, but I'm satisfied. Ivy was another of the earliest I had figured out design-wise.
Ardent Princess Sky. Her color is blue and her motif is a stylized cirrus cloud, which I incorporated into her headband. My understanding of her when she was first described to me was that she was very careworn and nurturing, but somewhere along the process of her development she did a face-heel-turn and became a stuck-up, parsimonious snip, and I had to change the drawing of her accordingly. Sky was my favorite (at least in terms of art) until I finished Dawn. I still find her one of the most aesthetically pleasing of the group. I want her headband.
Tough Princess Eve. Eve's color is indigo and her motif is a crescent moon, which I incorporated into her earring. She's the strong, silent type. I like what I've seen of her interactions with Holly, as the two apparently work as a pair--Holly is the ambassador, and Eve is the tactician, general, and bodyguard. Eve and I? We tight. She gave me the least problems when it came to design and art. Once I got the angle of her face figured out, drawing her was a walk in the park; not like her brat sisters, sheesh. I should draw myself giving her bro-knuckles or something because she's so chill, f'reals.
Apathetic Princess Violet. Her color is purple and her motif is a violet flower, which she is wearing as an accessory in her hair. While Ivy might have been sneaking out of the castle for street-fights, Violet was sneaking out for street drugs. I don't know how she managed to get away with being stoned all the time, but evidently her parents and servants either didn't care or couldn't see past their own noses. The angle on this one was tricky.
Ebony the Rogue. Her color is black and her motif is a stylized ebony branch, which I incorporated into her tattoo. Rumors have been circulating of an 8th Princess Camilla, kidnapped by a bandit just after the Cauldron incident. Wild and ferocious, the ebony-dyed highway robber is said to be amassing a band of rogues to take over the kingdom and claim her right to the throne as the true and original Princess Camilla...
Ebony was actually an accidental creation of mine, born when my first pic of Eve looked a little too femme fatale. I came up with her story on the spot as a playful suggestion, and with my permission, AC took it and ran with it. Ebony's concept has since changed drastically; In AC's canon incarnation, Ebony is Violet's street-walking alter ego, which I alluded to with Ebony's purple bandana. Alas, I'm still kind of attached to the idea of a rogue 8th Camilla.
In the process of making these princesses, I played with a number of styles and ideas. First they started off as 3/4 sketches, then I decided I wanted to try my hand at art nouveau, then I got the crazy idea to make each look like a stained glass window, as evidenced by my earlier WIP. Unfortunately, I could NOT, for the life of me, figure out how to render the glass in a way that was neither too complicated nor cheap-looking. As I stared at Photoshop in frustration for about the millionth time last night, I thought of a tutorial I'd seen somewhere to give sketches a soft, glowing finish, and I experimented with it on the lineart for the girls. I probably overdid it on the gaussian blur, but I really like the effect. Coloring the lineart of each of the girls afforded a convenient way to incorporate their assigned colors whilst making for an effect I find visually appealing, and it's definitely a style I'll play with again. Here are the girls without flat colors.
And here's a dump of some of the versions I did that are worth showing:
I still like these. These are the first versions of Dawn, Ivy, and the Eve-imposter that inspired the creation of Ebony. I decided against doing shots like these of all the princesses because I was intimidated by the difficulty of getting all of their proportions to match and designing/drawing clothes for all of them. I had a hard enough time with just their faces and accessories.
I thought about posting all of the versions I went through of Dawn, but I decided I don't want to relive that nightmare. *deletes them all* DX

IN ORDER!
Holly and Dawn ended up waaaay different-- I REALLY like how Dawn ended up, too, with the peekaboo hair and meeting the viewer's eyes. It does make her look a lot older, less of a child, and that worked out really well. Holly... very different look for her as well, and thought-provoking. I'm definitely going to be thinking more about her character, seeing this.
Holly's motherly nature sneaks in no matter what we do. xD Actually, I did kinda envision her as Mom #2 (you know how it is-- especially in families with a lot of kids, there's always one or two that step up and play mini-parent), but that changes for her pretty radically as soon as she's out and away from her sisters-- freedom!
Dawn's necklace is glorious. No pun intended. xD I'm gonna make that a centerpiece with her somehow, like something she fiddles with nervously or that catches the attention of others. Jewelry that big and striking might very well be taken as THE sign of her being the heir apparent, if it's given to her after her sisters leave (which I bet it would be).
Saff-- hmmm, foreshadowing. Didn't expect to see the veil turn black. *thoughtful*
xD I bet there ARE street fights for Ivy to get into. With her, though, I bet they're all the daylight kind. That's okay, she has her cousin's war to fight in soon enough.
Sky's headband-- wow. That shading. o.o My own hair would get horrifically tangled in it and probably have to be shaved off, but I want it, too. Sooooo pretty.
*snrk* Eve? She'd totally bro-knuckle. Although, so would Ivy.
Ahhh, Vi and her drugs... that's a tricky explanation. It's not that they don't care or don't know, trust me-- but while the royal family is less isolated from their people than most royals, it's also true that they are the ONLY royals-- Zart has no nobles, and non-heirs become normal citizens-- so there's still a very, very big gap between them and others in terms of authority. Even a small child, if it's a prince or princess, can overrule a guild head, a head of household in their own home, or even in some cases the king's own steward in the palace.
Their tutors and so on are chosen and assigned until age 12, but after that, non-heirs (in this case, ALL of the princesses, since Succession was not determined until age 17) choose their own studies and own teachers-- and own personal staff/servants. To teach them what it means to really be in authority, the rest of the family doesn't interfere with one's choices of who to hire, keep, or fire-- and many times, they won't even try to find someone another palace position if fired, unless that person has some sort of special skill or someone was hoping to hire them away from their sister anyway. Vi kept very, very few servants... say two or three, and her sole tutor quickly learned that he needn't even show up, because he had only been hired for show. That wasn't unnoticed, either, but each princess was responsible for attending her own studies-- no one would get after them if they didn't. Her servants learned that the only way to stay employed was to leave her alone and just do their best not to be seen, because she forgot they existed unless she saw them in person. Some of them, she actually declared fired, only to forget later-- and since hiring and firing was pretty much on the honor system, they just kept working and collecting their pay instead of leaving when she told them to.
In the city, it was a bit worse... the police are not allowed to touch a royal unless said royal is unconscious and in immediate danger. Stoned doesn't count... and they can't complete a raid (even a drug raid) where a royal is, either, if the royal is a customer, because her presence and patronage gives the joint a temporary exemption from any laws they happen to be violating (as long as the royal is fully aware of the laws being broken-- for example, if some naughty prince was caught in a brothel that also dealt heroine in the back, and he only knew about the brothel part, the police could still raid the heroine dealers). Whenever Vi wasn't around, they DID raid and seize, but there were two problems with that: Number one, there was always someplace else for her to find and go. It's a city, after all. Number two, she learned to be very sneaky-- the police would watch to see when she left, so she would leave in ways they couldn't see, ensuring that her favorite places stayed open a bit longer.
There's no hard-and-fast cutoff marking the age of majority in Zart... though Succession wasn't set until age 17 (when they were also expected to leave and/or make themselves useful), the royals are given increasing control over their own lives from age 8 onward, so by 15 or 16 there's really not much anyone can make them do if they don't want to. Vi was literally a royal embarrassment; but no one could even lock her in her room, much less put her in rehab.
The purple bandana for Ebony is a great touch. xD Not only is it alluding to Princess Vi, but Purple Lady is the demi-goddess of peaceful death in Mirror (kind of like Mirror's psychopomp, though not exactly), so she could easily claim that it's because she's deadly, and be believed.
There's still a rogue 8th Camila. It's just that it's a story they make up as girls, rather than a factual reality. xD It'll turn up in Mirror folklore, probably, right up there with the more outrageous stories of Princess Punchout (Ivy) and the sun god's wooing of the moon goddess-to-be. ^_^
The colored lineart has a rather neat effect. I'm not sure how well it works for all of them, but it definitely sets them apart in the lineart (which is really neat) and it's a different way to color the pieces. *thoughtful*
I notice sitting holly isn't in that last pic. xD You didn't think it was that bad, did you? I liked it!
Of course, I'm biased. I'm a horrible commissioner, I like just about everything.
Iiiiiiii still have the Dawn WIPs. >DDDD MUAHAHHAHAHAA.
Sorry if Holly's change wasn't what you had in mind. I just couldn't stand how different she looked from the others, and not as lovely either. I feel that now she looks like she belongs in the group.
I changed Saffron's veil to the yellow--I don't know why I left it black. That was not the intention...Much better! n_n
*fistbumps for Ivy and Eve*
If Violet's essentially been given the go-ahead to do whatever she pleases, why is she ashamed enough to run-away and go off the deep end as Ebony? She practically had permission with an prevailing attitude like that.
Uh. Forgot about the Holly one. *shrug* I didn't love it enough to care showing it here. I can't even find it in my computer...ah well. I'm glad you liked it. :)
Well, the point is that my computer's no longer choking on them all. XD Seriously, I probably deleted 50+ files of wips and alt versions of your commissions from my computer! It will probably run faster now! XP
I liked Holly as she was. xD But you know me-- I just take different versions as different points in a character's timeframe. Remember when Sky looked forlorn? That inspiration didn't disappear.
Ahh, well, yes, Vi. It is very true that she was not ashamed of her actions, nor did/could her family intervene. However, something that came up in Succession (though re-reading it, I totally did not make this as clear as it should be), Vi is a devotee of Tetra, the creation&destruction&chaos&Truth god, actually considered the highest or most powerful of the gods major (I've toyed with the idea that he's actually THE creator, but not sure). And that she upset him, so he pretty much disowned her... declared her "last and lowest in all things" until she repents. Of course, it's not the drugs and stuff that upset him-- she ended up in his worship in the first place because he's got a large number of worshipers among her 'friends'-- but the attitude that led to it. So basically she got told 'everything you think you know is wrong, and by the way it's pissing me off' by her personal deity. And she's for real with that worship, not a Rice Believer, so it's a pretty profound shock that leads to all the rest.
*giggles* It might indeed run faster.
And that's how I know you're not running Linux! *tsk* xD
YES I remember because I was so confused when you said she looked too sensitive, but that's the way you described her to me in the first place o.< The pissy-prissy personality was a later development.
LOL, she had a Saul moment.
I'VE BEEN FOUND OUT.
