Mistborn

I just finished reading Brandon Sanderson's novel Mistborn: The Final Empire and...um. I still haven't decided whether I liked it or not. I don't generally read adult fiction/fantasy because it seems to be excessively violent, smutty, and/or just plain grueling to read, but this particular book came to me highly recommended, and written by a Creative Writing professor at BYU (land of the prudes, and I say that very lovingly), so, I thought, "how bad could it be?"

...I...I have never read of so much carnage. @_@ The writing was wonderful, and many elements of the story so compelling that I couldn't put it down, but there was at least one night that I lay awake unable to sleep for fear of nightmares. By the time the 500th character was horrifically mutilated I was wondering "WHY AM I STILL READING THIS?" But I finished, and it had a very satisfying ending.

Now I'm torn.  It's the first book of a series, and I have an intense curiosity to know what happens next, but I'm not sure if it's worth stomaching the possibility of seeing more characters get dismembered or flayed or turned inside out or whatever morbidity awaits. I took the second book with me to work today, and I almost picked it up during my long expanse of downtime proctoring Custodial Core--but I lost the nerve and instead drew sketches of some stuff from the first book. I didn't have the book with me for reference, so I just drew from what I could remember of my impressions while reading.

OHMYGOSH. I TOTALLY FORGOT HOW AWESOME THE THIRD BOOK IS. OHMYGOSH. Seeing your drawing of a Mistwraith reminded me. OHMYGOSH. I completely forgot my favorite character. How could I do that. OHMYGOSH. Thank you for drawing this to remind me that I love TenSoon more than anyone. *nonsensical fangirl rant/rave will end here now. Sorry D:*

Ooh, I really like Vin's expression! I think I imagined her hair to be choppier, but I'm sure by the time they're grooming her to be a lady she does have it more like you drew. She almost looks like a school-of-hard-knocks version of Rapunzel (with her short hair from the end of the movie.) Hahaha, Elend looks ridiculous, but then again, he kind of was. Sazed looks MUCH more regal than I pictured him! I like it! I respect him a lot more, when I picture him like this. That Mistwraith drawing is amazing. *wistful sigh* you're *SO* much better at drawing stuff like that than me. You and Julie both. <3 I love these sketches! :D

Some part of me thinks you posted that just to increase the HOHMYGOSHMUSTKNOW levels of curiosity currently tormenting me so as to provoke me into finishing the series. XD

I think Vin's hair should be choppier too, since I pictured this particular sketch of her being relatively soon after meeting Kelsier but, alas, I didn't manage to pull it off. Ugh, Elend IS ridiculous. When he sauntered into the story I was thinking "*eye roll* Ah, enter the good-bad-boy love interest," and I was annoyed with Vin for falling head over heels for him. SAAAAZED <3 You know, I only kind of want to maybe read the rest of the series for him. He's so cool. My take on him was definitely borrowed/inspired by this http://inkthinker.deviantart.com/art/Mistborn-Adventure-Game-Vin-and-Sazed-274019301 (I love this Vin too, I was trying to draw mine like this but I couldn't remember the details). Awwww thank you! I feel the Mistwraith would look a lot better if I'd had pics of real bones to reference instead of going off of memory and guess work...I'm really impressed that lately you've been into drawing skulls and more animals! That would make for a much better looking Mistwraith for sure.
