Naturally we had to consider the reverse situation, wherein Vahaadi meets Spark's younger self, and we quickly realized that while Spark's approach toward re-befriending (or pre-befriending?) Vahaadi as a teen would be funny, Vahaadi's approach to fourteen year old Spark would be basically terrifying. Not intentionally, but Vahaadi's sauntering charisma often pushes the threshold of creepiness. Thus, their meeting would look a great deal like a cliche shojo anime scene: An attractive, mysterious, unsettling older male appears like a shadow out of the darkness, stares deeply into the young female protagonist's glossy, mesmerized eyes, and murmurs something terrifically eerie that should definitely not be directed at a girl as young as she. Such scenes are supposed to be somehow romantic, I guess, but I think they're scary. However, the idea of such a scene happening between Vahaadi and Spark was amusing enough to me that I thought it warranted a spoof. While working on this I did lots of "research" (ie watching Shugo Chara, reading Tokyo MewMew, cautiously surfing the web for anime pics, and this fantastic tutorial) to create what I hope looks like a passable screencap!
Spark: DaaaaaAAAAAAAADDDDDD!!! There was a creepy guy on my balcony! I PUNCHED HIM IN THE FACE.
Spark's Dad: Atta' Girl!
Vahaadi: *holding his broken nose after falling from the second story window* D:!!! Was it something I said??!!))
Creating art this sharp, flat and shiny was actually way harder than it may look. Cel shading (the blocky, clear cut distinction of shadows vs blending) doesn't grant a lot of room for mistakes, and I'm sure my lighting is off. Good practice though! And hey, I finally have a pic of Vahaadi in color. The ridiculously shiny highlights in their hair, the fuzzy blur, and the grainy texture all make me cringe, but the pic didn't look "anime" enough without them!
This was fun to do. So fun, I never want to try this again. :P However, I think it's worth mentioning that it was actually working on this pic that inspired the Loose Canon project.

Title comes from Ellie Goulding's song "Starry Eyed", which could well serve as the anthem of all shojo series ever.

It is very weird to see them in anime style. I could totally see this in an anime, too. But weeeeeeeeeeeeeird! xD
Okay, I'm finally getting around to properly commenting on this. I hadn't expected Spark to have braids (even though I think I drew her like that once in her meme. I just always picture her with a ponytail now.) but it just adds even more to the creeper aspect of this picture because she looks even more girly/young.
I LOVE Vahaadi's glowy eyes. They really just pop and set the ominous tone for the whole scene. The lighting is done really well (kudos for cel shading!)
ahahaha his chest hair. You did it very well! It's subtle, not distracting, and pretty accurate looking. It adds a nice rugged touch to what might otherwise make him a typical schmarmy pseudo effeminate anime creeper. The line is SO funny. Completely wrong, yet, it's actually true.
Is it bad that their whole relationship could be summed up in that infamous phrase "This isn't what it looks like"? XD
XD That is great. You're right, there are a lot of creepers in shoujo anime. For some reason middle schoolers are always getting involved with the high school guys. And in Shugo Chara, isn't Amu in grade school?! *squick* Heck, even Mamoru is in college while Usagi is barely in high school, and that's near the end of the series.
For the picture itself, I think you're right about the light sources... the one behind Spark's head doesn't really affect Vahaadi at all, though it really should. That said, I love his expression, and the glowy eyes. :3 Aaaaand... yes, the chest hair is... very nice. Hehe.
Aryn - there was a point in my life at which I would have been deliriously happy to know that someday I'd be able to pull off an anime screenshot. I used to think anime was the coolest thing ever. Fortunately, I am over that phase. XD My art still has a lot of anime influence, but that you think this looks weird is a little encouraging.
Evie - hahaha!
Rimedragona - uggghhh yes, squick indeed! Amu is like 8 or something. CUH. REEP. EE. I figured the light behind Krissy's head is mostly blocked by her own shadow on Vahaadi's face, but I tried to show that light on his hair, hand, tail, and shoulder. It's a little hard to tell though. It's stuff like this that makes me wish I had one of those 3d modeling programs so I could play with angles and lighting and see the results.
